The focus of the campaign is bringing awareness to the brain injuries resulting from intimate partner violence, but the full focus of the week has even more impact. The statistics tell us one in three women in Canada have encountered IPV in their lifetime. For some the bruises go away, but the resulting brain injuries last a lifetime. We all need to stop the violence. As a volunteer organization, the Canadian Royal Purple’s cause is brain injury awareness and prevention. With this understanding, members of the Canadian Royal Purple have combined events of advocacy, caring for the survivors, fund raising and education into all the events featured during the week called Purple Thursday x 7.
An important partner and advocate in this year’s campaign is the Canadian Centre for IPV-BI in Ontario.
We will start the week with an information blitz with regular and social media, followed by two education symposiums – one focusing on the leading research into IPV on Wednesday, followed on Friday by an eye-opening webinar from Canada’s shelters. The leading event of the week is the delivery of over 5000 Purple Care Bags to Canada’s shelters. The women, children and men who flee intimate partner violence often come to the shelters with no personal possessions. Our Care bags are filled with those items, toys, books, calendars and most of the basics for their next day.
