Williams Lake raises awareness of IPV caused brain injuries

Picture
City Hall will be lit purple the week of Oct. 12-18 upon the request of Williams Lake Royal Purple.
The society is part of a nation-wide cause which raises awareness and aims to prevent further brain injuries caused by interpersonal violence (IPV).
According to Statistics Canada, eight in ten victims of police-reported IPV in 2022 were women and girls. From 2014 to 2022, police-reported IPV rates increased by 19 per cent for women and girls and by 21 per cent for men and boys. However, most cases of IPV are not reported. In 2019, 80 per cent of people who experienced IPV did not report it to police, with women reporting 22 per cent of the time, and men reporting 14 per cent of the time.
According to the Canadian Royal Purple (CRP) society, one in three women experience physical violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime and up to 92 per cent of these violent encounters include hits to the head, face and neck, including strangulation. An estimated 75 per cent of survivors have possible brain injuries, and, due to a limited amount of research on the impacts of IPV-related brain injuries, services tailored to survivors' needs are scarce.
During its Sept. 16 regular council meeting, council voted in favour of proclaiming the third week of October to be Purple Thursday X7, joining the CRP's nation-wide event. Since 2022, the society has raised nearly $400,000 which has been donated to support brain injury needs. The society is also working to develop frameworks for community-led prevention programs.
As part of Purple Thursday, the society hosts an online auction beginning on Oct. 13 and running until Oct. 26, offering the items and experiences to bid for. On Oct. 15, the society will host a nation-wide educational event over Zoom and on Oct. 17, an educational sharing event about the impact of Purple Thursday also over Zoom.

The society also hosts BrainLove Month in March and a Royal Purple Week in May.
